What about Tosbiha LED LCD TVs?

Toshiba Regza SV670U Series of LED TVs with Local Dimming

Toshiba Regza SV670U Series of LED TVs with Local Dimming

I understand that Samsung and Sony are the "Big Dogs" in the HDTV world (and the most expensive); But what about Toshiba LED/LCD HDTV with local dimming? I've read that the Toshiba LED with local dimming is excellent, yet it doesn't get talked about, even though it is significantly less expensive than the Samsung or Sony.

Yes....Samsung and Sony make great HDTV's, but at the prices they ask the TV's should come with a French maid and a bottle of 25 year old single malt scotch!!!

Toshiba is a very big name in electronics. I own several Toshiba products that have worked flawlessly for many years. That includes a 36 inch Toshiba CRT TV that I've had for nearly 15 years and it refuses to die!!

How about a fair, open-minded review of a Toshiba LED HDTV.

Thanks! Bill R.

Old Sony CRTs
by: Gary Sellars

There was a time, about 20 or so years ago, when Sony's Trinitron had not seen any significant improvement in ten years and Toshiba came out with a television that was better than Sony's at that time.

It was about that same time that Mitsubishi also made TVs that looked better than Sony's.

It made Sony get on the stick and improve their Trinitron.

I mention for the sake of background information. It's a mistake to assume that Sony is best simply because they often are.

Toshiba new LED TVs with Local Dimming
by: Andrew Ghigo

Thanks Bill for your post. You have managed to point out one very important issue - namely that it is not just top brands that can make great TVs.

To start with, I did not have the chance to review the latest Toshiba REGZA LED TVs. But I have to say that personally I like Toshiba LCDs. I was never disappointed with their overall picture performance even though the black levels on these LCDs tend not to be exactly on par with their equivalents from Sony and Samsung.

But this is an issue that would crop up only in a side-by-side comparison. Toshiba stylish, feature-packed LCD TVs are generally capable performers - delivering a great overall picture at a more affordable price.

As to the new LED line from Toshiba, both the 55SV670U 55-Inch and the 46SV670U 46-Inch come with a most interesting feature set. I cannot say how these perform but the use of a LED backlight with local dimming should definitely help deliver improved performance over the latest trend of edge-lit LED TVs we have seen from Samsung and Sony.

As expressed on my site, edge-lit LED TVs can never deliver the same level of picture performance as LED LCD TVs with local dimming technology when it comes to screen uniformity, side viewing discoloring, and background brightness; in these areas, edge-lit LED TVs tend to fall short of their high price tag.
