Sears warns customers about fading blacks.

by Laurie
(Grand Junction,CO, USA)

While shopping for a plasma TV at Sears recently, the salesman discouraged us from looking at Panasonic plasma sets because "Sears has had too many problems and complaints about them". He told us about the problem with the blacks looking faded and washed out over time and even showed us some floor models that clearly displayed softer, grayer blacks in their pictures compared to the LED TV sets sitting next to them. It was our understanding that next year Sears will not even carry plasma sets anymore. It was certainly food for thought!

Fading Plasmas
by: www.advancedaudiovideo.com

Your comment about Plasma's being a "thing of the past" is pretty much how the industry is looking, for the most part. However, there are still some larger models of plasma's that will continue to be, at least for a time until the market catches up. The best "blacks" that we have seen have been with the backlit LED's.

But be careful about TV black levels on shop models!
by: A. Ghigo

While the Panasonic plasma black level issue is there, yet please keep in mind that the black level settings on a TV - plasma or LCD - can vary significantly depending on the TV settings.

I am not being pro-Panasonic and sincerely deplore the way Panasonic has handled this issue with current customers.

But the fact that black levels are highly dependent on TV settings means that it is easy for a sales rep in a retail shop to get a lighter shade of black on one TV model in order to help sell a more expensive model. And LED TVs definitely cost more than most plasma HDTVs.

This sales-reps approach is more than understandable, after all, the more expensive TVs generally carry higher markups.
