What is driving the sales behind flat-panel Plasma Displays?
The Plasma Television Invasion

Plasma displays are still relatively expensive in comparison to other display technology. Yet plasma televisions are fast become extremely popular.  Why?

Plasma Television Sales

Flat-screen plasma displays are literally flying off store shelves. Some really big screens have also started to emerge; plasma television screen sizes of up to 61 inches and over are readily available to the end customer.

Plasma flat panel displays, like their LCD Tv counterparts, are only a few inches thick, and can literally be hung on the wall.

Sales in the US alone during the year 2003 have tripled in comparison to the year before with some 700,000 flat-panel tv sets - pumping in hundreds of millions of dollars into the hands of retailers and manufacturers alike.

It is as if plasma high-definition displays are inexpensive purchases!

It is true that during the last months, prices have plummeted, yet flat-panel plasma displays still cost some two to three times more than any other video display technology. This means that plasma television  sets are among the most expensive of all  video displays.

Just to start getting the feel of it, a 61-inch Plasma Tv may cost anything between $15,000 to $21,000.

One of the largest plasma displays presently available on the market is the Samsung Tantus HPN6339 63" HDTV-Ready Flat-Panel Plasma TV; it is selling at amazon.com for around $20,000.

Recently, we have seen the introduction of some truly affordable plasma television sets. A typical case in point is the SVA HD4208TIII-PDP 42" Flat-Panel Plasma EDTV - an interesting 42 inch plasma television set at just under $2,500. It is not HDTV-ready but at such a price, it surely represent a great buy for a plasma Television set.

Even at such a price, plasma displays are still relatively expensive. Hence, it is only logical to think that price should be a major drawback when it comes to plasma television sales.  But is it really so?

The truth is that people are still managing to put thousands of dollars together and put yet another screen in their homes - and this is taking place at a time when it is estimated that most households in the US have already between two to three television sets!

What is driving these sales?

For sure, the latest flat-screen plasma displays are generally capable of delivering great picture quality, especially when driven by a high definition Tv signal.

Plasma television sets in particular deliver high resolution images of exceptional color accuracy and uniform image brightness.

They support a wide angle of view both vertical and horizontal - meaning that they do not suffer from image degradation - as you move away from the normal to the screen - associated with some rear-projection Tv systems and earlier LCD Tv sets.

However, the surge in sales of flat-panel plasma displays registered in 2003 and beginning of 2004 is not due to the picture quality, but rather to the way these display panels look!

It is their slim design that is taking the 'top-spot' - totally unobtrusive, capable of integrating well with the rest of any room furniture.

Surprised? Maybe not, but it is the slim-built that is so peculiar with modern flat-panel displays that is really pushing big screen home theater enthusiasts to spend thousands in a flat panel Plasma television sets.
