Contrast Ratio: Is it worth paying more for a 1,000,000:1 CR LED LCD HDTV?

by JOE

Does the picture deterioration from off angles of these two LED LCD TVs justify paying more money for a 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio? Would a CCFL LCD (Samsung Series 8 52A860) realize a larger benefit:cost ratio?

In other words, does the trade off for deeper or truer blacks far outweigh the problem with off-angle viewing?

Looking for experienced viewers

I guess that's one thing the big box stores offer: the chance to physically see the TV. Tough to do when shopping online. Does anyone have experience with this situation? Do they feel the trade off (better video/energy savings vs degradation in picture with off-angle viewing)is worthwhile?

Is it worth paying more for an LED LCD HDTV
by: Andrew Ghigo

Paying more just for the shake of a 1,000,000:1 dynamic CR rating - with all that this high contrast ratio implies, is in itself not worth the significantly extra expense. After all, it is not contrast ratio alone that makes the picture [more on contrast ratio can be found on the site at http://www.practical-home-theater-guide.com/contrast-ratio.html]. And this applies irrespective of any other performance issue - in favor or against that there may be with any HDTV - irrespective of brand and display technology.

Further more, while admittedly the issue with off angle viewing associated with these LED LCD HDTVs can be a determining factor for some to shift their attention on CCFL based sets, yet there is a lot more to LCD LED backlighting than an excessively high dynamic contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 on one side and the somewhat below average off angle viewing performance on the other. In particular, their color accuracy, true blacks with correct seating, extended lifetime, and very low power consumption represent major advancements over standard LCDs.

Further more, to what extent this off angle viewing will impact your experience depends on your viewing habits - mainly the preferred viewing distance and overall seating layout.

So basically the whole issue remains one of finding the right match to your exact personal requirements.
