BLACK LEVEL

by Michael Ragebult
(Johannesburg, Gauteng South Africa )

I am a vision controller in the broadcasting world in South Africa.

I am not happy with WHERE WE RUN OUR BLACK LEVELS WHEN WE PRODUCE PICTURES DURING OUR RECORDINGS IN GENERAL.

I FEEL THAT WE SHOULD RUN IT A LITTLE LOWER IN ORDER TO HELP WITH RICHER SATURATION ESPECIALLY THE GRASS AND SKIN TONES WHEN WE COVER SPORTS.

QUESTION: IF BLACK LEVEL PLAYS SUCH AN IMPORTANT part in colors with the latest TV sets, where should we RUN OUR BLACK levels when we're producing pictures - a LITTLE LOWER or the same as the usual old fashion?

Michael

Black Level in TV recording

The real issue is that there are standards that need to be followed. And the fact that black level is such an important picture parameter implies that it is even more important to simply follow with the standards.

If a TV is capable of deeper blacks, let the TV owner adjust the TV for that but the problem is that most TVs fail to correctly render shadow detail especially in predominantly dark content.

It is therefore necessary to adjust the bottom of the luminance range to avoid either washing out the black tones into grays or collapsing picture information into the signal clipping that occurs a small distance below the saturated black level.
